The Submarine Centre, Helensburgh – Update

Several Friends committee members have recently enjoyed visiting the excellent Submarine Centre in Helensburgh, Scotland. Their superb exhibit X51 Stickleback Submarine is well explained by an engaging 50 minute film featuring unique graphics and explanations of the submarine’s role and history. The Submarine Heritage Centre’s work is a valuable continuing contribution to X Craft and submarine history generally, and a visit is recommended.

Pennie and I visited the Helensburgh Submarine Heritage Centre some years back. We had no real expectation, but what a surprise! The foyer is quite small and has a few artefacts and books. We were the only visitors and were ushered into the hall – an empty high ceiling blank white walled room, with X51 on tall pillars in the middle. David offered us the X51 film, which is projected on the walls. Best of all, the whole inside of the X Craft is animated – people, machinery – the lot! “What would you like next?” he asked. We chose the Remembrance ‘film’. Both were absolutely stunning. The team really know how a highly flexible innovative venue works. For example, ‘locals’ use it for Mess Dinners and Wedding Receptions. Not to be missed – you won’t be disappointed!
