Submarine Book of Remembrance – Memorial Section Added

The Submarine Book of Remembrance, often known as the Online Book of Remembrance or OBOR, was the gift of Friends to The Submariner Memorial Appeal. It was launched, alongside the memorial, in May 2022. The book contains the names of 5945 submariners who gave their lives in the service. A very small team of volunteer researchers is writing short biographies for each person and the stories behind the loss of the boats in which they served. So far only 19% of the individual stories and 40% of the boat stories have been completed. Do contact us if you would like to assist with research and story writing which is often quite emotional and always interesting.

You don’t need to be looking for a particular name to find the site moving. Simply scrolling through the pages, boat by boat, story by story, brings home the sheer scale of sacrifice in a way that few other things can. Visitors are able to add comments and upload photos, and many find this a powerful way to pay tribute to their relatives, but just as many find that time spent quietly browsing is a tribute in itself.

We are now delighted to announce a significant enhancement to the site. Just launched is a new, searchable Memorials Section. This lists all the memorials we are aware of, together with the names of those listed on them, each name linked back to their personal page. Do visit the site, take your time over it, and remember those no longer with us and please let us know of any other memorials which we may have missed.
