Memorial to HMS Umpire Unveiled

On Saturday 19 July 2025, 84 years to the day after she sank, a memorial to the 16 submariners lost was unveiled by Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder KBE CB, a past FOSM, at All Saints Church Mundesley where the body of Sub Lt Tony Godden DSC washed ashore and where he is buried. The memorial project was led by the Norfolk Branch of the Submariners Association who raised the money by many raffles and crowdfunding.

A team from HMS VENGEANCE represented the Submarine Service.

A truly fitting memorial and event, congratulations Tom Herman and the many others involved in the HMS UMPIRE work especially SA Norfolk Branch.

When I was working for KGFS, the brother of Lt PCM Banister, and his wife used to put on an annual fundraising lunch, in their garden, in memory of his brother and the crew of HMS UMPIRE. In 2003 it was attended by Vice Admiral Sir John Roxburgh.

I and My Partner attended this service. And in was a very moving and beautiful service.
I have had the privilege of previously diving on the Umpire. Unfortunately the visibility was very poor as often is the case in the North Sea, however I paid My respects to the Submariners on Eternal Patrol.
The Boat’s motto is ‘Keep on keeping on’ and I have used this at times in my life to inspire Me.
