Malta George Cross Commemoration

On 12 April Friends RNSM Committee Member Francis Dickinson attended the George Cross Island Association (GCIA) Service and Commemoration at the Saluting Battery, Valletta marking the 83rd anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta in WW2.

Diplomats, military organisations and veterans groups come together with Malta armed forces to remember the island and its defenders’ sacrifices. As part of the service at St Paul’s Pro Cathedral the following Sunday Francis (who also has a role with the GCIA) laid a wreath in memory of Royal Navy and Allied Submariners and base staff who lost their lives defending Malta GC, 1940-3. The spire at St Paul’s has been restored and the plaque commemorating the 10th Submarine Flotilla faces north to Manoel Island where the submarines were based.
