Alliance Battery Explosion

Today (29 September 2021) is the fiftieth anniversary of the battery explosion in HMS Alliance alongside in Portland.  We remember in particular CEA Ray Kimber P/M933541 who lost his life.

    Amen to that.
As the CO early in my first command this was a very very sad and serious event.
Ray Kimber and particularly those in his and adjoining messes were innocent victims. The crew rallied magnificently and after repairs were completed the submaine completed her final commission before paying off in 1973.

Yes, a tough test for all. I joined the boat towards the end of this saga and much enjoyed the last year of running before we paid off. We had some adventures!
