Officers’ Training Class of Spring 1934. In the back row on the extreme left is Lieutenant J.F.R.Crews, and second from the right is, I believe Lieutenant Lennox Napier. If that is right, then both these officers had sons on the same Long’N’ course at HMS Dryad in 1971, namely Nick Crews and Christopher Napier (the third submariner on that Long ‘N’ course was Johnny Cooke).

HMS MEDWAY at Shanghai 1936
From Barrie Downer

HMS MEDWAY Ship's Company at Shanghai in April 1936 during the 1934 to 1937 Commission of the Barrow-built Submarine Depot Ship. The Captain SM4 at that time was Captain Cyril G B Coltart.

The photo was with an album kept by an Able Seaman Samuel Webb of HMS MEDWAY which also included photos of Hong Kong, Singapore, Wei-Hai-Wei, Shanghai, Peking, Manila and Japan - places so familiar to Submariners of a previous era. The Photo and the Album are part of the Submarine Heritage Collection in the Local History section of the Barrow Central Library.
