Interesting! In my 2024 book Salt Horse – the edited memolir of Rear Adm Claude Cumberlege who was seconded to the RAN 1913-22 – there is a description of the search for AE-1 off the east coast of the former German colony of New Britain. Cumberelege was in the area following the Australian invasion of of New Britain, comanding a destroyer flotilla in HMAS Warrego. Despite combing the sea for days, inspecting reefs and beaches for any debris, no trace of AE-1 was found. However, one of the destroyers did discover a German steamer hidden up a river!
