AGM 2025 – Report

From Francis Dickinson

The 29th Friends RNSM AGM took place on Friday, 19 September, 2025. Our President Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope and Chairman Rear Admiral Jon Westbrook took the meeting through a series of positive developments in the Friends’ continued support to the NMRN and its submarine heritage work, alongside educational and other initiatives by the committee and members. The Friends have consolidated a strong financial position ready to contribute an increased amount to the proposed Mezzazine Floor development of the Museum, as well as the longer term memorial wall project. In parallel the very active website showcases ongoing heritage activity including continued work on OBOR (the Submarine Online Book of Remembrance).

As we enter our 30th year, membership of the Friends stands at 910. The committee is working on plans to position for the future, from a strong financial base outlined by Treasurer Matt Clark. The Chairman thanked outgoing Deputy Treasurer Peter Jeanneret for his many years of service as Treasurer, and the Friends’ appreciation for his agreeing to act as Accounts Independent Examiner as well as OBOR work going forward. Giles Fletcher was also thanked on completion of many years’ service as Independent Examiner.

Will Corbett then gave a fascinating talk on Admiral Sir Martin Dunbar-Nasmith VC, taking in early submarine adventures as well as famous exploits in the Dardanelles and Sea of Marmara in HMS E11 in 1915. The talk highlighted key exhibits in the Museum as well the qualities required of early RN submariners. Friends member Malcolm Avery has written a novel (Hellespont, Through the Jaws of Death, by Byrne Avery) drawing on these stirring times.

Commander Oliver Morrow RN, the current Teacher, then gave a summary into current commitments and activity of Royal Navy submariners today at HMNB Clyde and beyond. Members particularly appreciated this insight and the chance to combine heritage work with support for today’s RN submariners.

We then enjoyed the ever popular catch up over drinks and refreshments. Our thanks to all those involved in the work to prepare for this successful AGM, and to the NMRN for hosting and attending. Next year’s AGM will be on 18 September, 2026.
