NOTES FOR CHAPTER XIII

1. Captain HV King OBE RN relieved Captain JG Roper OBE RN who went to the staff of A(S) as Chief Staff Officer (Administration and Personnel) in place of Captain McIntyre.
2. Captain (S) Five was aghast at what he considered was a wanton waste of scarce torpedoes but the Admiral (Submarines) supported Lieutenant Colvin and the Admiralty later approved his action.
3. H50 had to leave patrol on 9th and H34 relieved H43 on 11th.
4. Uredd was manned by the crew of B1 that had been laid up.
5. This minefield only sank a small fishing vessel called the Talyn.
6. These torpedoes had CCR pistols and it seems highly likely that they failed.
7. Two duplex and one CCR pistols all set to hit.
8. Fortunately for her, she was ordered back to Fro Havet when it was suspected that Tirpitz might make a move and the bombing restriction returned to her!
9. The Polish manned P551, an ex-American S-class submarine.
10. She had no bottom patent log and no way of measuring engine revolutions.
11. Minerve broke down, and was replaced by Uredd.
12. If she had missed one or both of them she would have compromised her position, and in any case might not have had time to reload. Her action was approved by A(S).

13. They were to work together with a watch off, watch on, patrol
with one of them charging and the other patrolling inshore.
14. This sinking is not substantiated by post war research.
15. Graph was the captured U570, commissioned with a British crew. ‘Graph’ was the codename of the operation to bring her back from Iceland after her capture. She had already been refitted and had run first-of-class trials, and had joined the Third Flotilla.
16. It also led to a number of movements by enemy heavy ships being unopposed, because patrols were not continuous and there were no submarines on patrol at the time.
17. The Polish Jastrzab (ex-P551), Unique and P514.
18. Triumph, Tempest, P38, P39, P36, Pandora, Upholder, Urge, Olympus, Thorn and Talisman.
19. P41, P43, P44, P45, P46, P48, P51, P54, P211, P212, P247, P219, P222, P614, P615, P228, P221, P217 and Traveller.
20. P512, P514, P552, P553, P554 and P555.
21. P614 and P615. Two others, Murat Reis and Oruc Reis were taken out by British crews and handed over to Turkey in March and May
1942. They were numbered P611 and P612 while British manned.
22. L27, P512, P514, and the Dutch O15.
23. Severn was sent to Freetown from Gibraltar for some months and the Dundee submarines had to spend periods for anti-submarine training at Scapa Flow for the Home Fleet.
