NOTES FOR CHAPTER XXIV

1. A great deal about the positions of German minefields was known to us by signal intelligence but does not seem to have included these fields. Syrtis was specifically ordered to attack shipping using only Otvaer Fjord, Tennholm Fjord and Fleinfjord.
2. A pre-war civilian design for commercial flying boats on the South American route.
3. Syrtis was in any case probably lost before she got there.

4. It had, in fact, been reinforced as recently as February and March 1944.
5. Commander Rendel, a retired submarine officer was appointed to co-ordinate the project. The three firms were Broadbents of Huddersfield, Markhams of Chesterfield and Marshalls of Gainsborough.
6. Figures for January - May 1944. This also applies to subsequent figures in this paragraph.
