Cachalot Cache

From Tim Bolton. Photos of Cachalot departure from Singapore, leaving the Depot Ship (HMSForth) and SM7 in 1970 (I think). John Drabble was the CO and he is visible outboard of the fin as we slipped with nobody visible.

From Tim Bolton. Visiting Plessey Factory near Fareham

This took place in 1971(I think) following an incident when we were dived south of the Lizard-deep and pottering inside our allocated area waiting for the RAF (inevitably) to cancel a Friday exercise serial. Something was heard to brush against our casing and it turned out to be a towed body undertrial for Plessey ‐ who had no right to be in our area.

Their thing was quite expensive (apparently) and it came off much worse than us from the encounter. Eventually, relations between Plessey and the RN must have been sorted out and the name of the PRO (Mr Costello) can be seen on the Welcome Notice.

The 3 photos show the CO (John Drabble), XO (Mile Edmunds) and LO (Tim Bolton), all of whom were lucky enough to meet Miss Plessey.

From Tim Bolton. Cachalot Re-Dedication in Plymouth

The 3 photos were taken in 1973. The CO was Adam Wainwright and other officers (from left to right) are John McMillan, Tim Bolton (LO), Chris Trott, Peter Corderoy (MEO) and David Wilmot-Smith (XO),with Brian Jones on the casing behind.

Adam’s wife(Jenny) is beside the cake with our highly talented Leading Chef, who made it. I think the civilian with Adam in the other photo was representing the Southampton branch of the Master Mariners (nicknamed the “Cachalots”).
