Subject:Chevaline
Noting the previous posts on the absence of an official history of Chevaline, members should be aware that one is now being written by the Cabinet Office official historian, Professor Matthew Jones, after a commitment in 2008 by the PM. This is due to take 4 years to complete, and if you cannot wait that long spare a glance at the Proceedings from the RAeS of 2004, 'The History of the UK Strategic Deterrent: The Chevaline Programme'. This contains a lot of interesting papers covering all aspects of the programme (ISBN No 1-85768-109-6).

Subject:CHEVALINE
I agree with Dick Glenister's comment at entry 11 that the importance of Chevaline has not been properly recognised. Dick should know, as he fired the first Chevaline modified Polaris missile from RENOWN commanded by the late Paddy Ryan. It would be appropriate for the Friends to invite someone to take the lead.

Subject:Hello from veteran U.S. Airman
So I'm actually a Yank (Chinese-American, actually) former fly-boy, but have been intrigued with subs ever since my childhood after having read 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. But be they subs, ships or planes,I find the invention of mechanical conveying craft to be among mankind's finest achievements. Was referred to 'Friends' by a link from the HMS Alliance site. A friend of mine who is a veteran Royal Dolphins submariner, is presently a guide at the museum.

I have visited a few Museums abroad But none match the RN.Submarine Museum. As a one time Guide, I know the pleasure many get form their tour of the museum, especially the Aliance. Dave Cassie

Subject:Best wishes for Jeff Tall's retirement
I would like to reiterate Barry Brooks' entry regarding your excellent website and also I hope that it is not too late to wish Jeff Tall a very happy and healthy retirement, a stalwart to say the least who will be missed very much. On a different subject, a great deal has been written about Polaris but I do think that the very successful, although secretive at the time, Chevaline project should be recognised and recorded. Richard (Dick) Glenister.

Well done team for an excellent website and for the opportunities that it opens to engage submariners from across the world. Keep up the good work. Very best wishes to Jeff on his retirement and a large BZ for all that he has done to bring the Silent Service, and our contribution to ending the Cold War (in particular), to the public's attention.  I have been a friend a number of years and served for 22 years in the best submarine service in the world. I like this web site and will keep in contact through it. I noted the comments by Jim Roskilly, with who I served in 'Tally Ho' and 'Tiptoe'. I would like to ask a question. Who will take over the guides job once all the 'diesel' submariners have crossed the bar?
